Since the world’s newest nation of Southern Sudan won independence through popular referendum in July of 2011, an already tense relationship with its neighbor to the north has grown increasingly violent and confrontational.  In recent weeks attacks by proxy militias in the disputed border areas of Abyei, Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile states –attacks supported by the government of Sudan in Khartoum-- have resulted in thousands and deaths and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians.  While innocent civilians flee their homes, a UNHCR press release issued on 25 January 2012, reports that the government of Sudan in Khartoum conducted air raids targeting refugee transit sites in the Upper Nile State of Southern Sudan.

A number of observers have voiced concern of a possible catastrophe resulting from a lack of food and consequent starvation that might affect the lives and survival of thousands of people.   According to US Special Envoy to Sudan Princeton Lyman, “This could be a major, major calamity.”

Global Majority has issued the following statement , calling on the international community to take action to prevent further bloodshed in Southern Sudan.
