ABOUT THE TRAINING SEMINAR

mcol.jpg The Monterey College of Law's Mandell-Gisnet Center for Conflict Management in partnership with Global Majority is hosting an Advanced Mediation Training Seminar. This 32 hour certificate course meets MCLE requirements and can be taken for two semester units of pass/fail academic credit from the Monterey College of Law, which may be transferred to other academic institutions. It provides the option of enrolling for eight or 25 MCLE hours of California State Bar approved credit.

"Local Mediation in a Global Context" is designed to maximize participants' exposure to the skills and techniques necessary to effectively negotiate and mediate conflict situations from the local to the international level. It will be conducted by a diverse selection of local and international speakers, trainers, and professors addressing a range of conflict resolution topics.

Who can Enroll?

This program is open to final-year undergraduate students, graduate students, law students, and professionals. Applicants from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply. No more than 60 total participants will be accepted for this program.

Seminar Topics

In addition to establishing a solid foundation in principled negotiation theory and practice, throughout the week international and local guest speakers will present on diverse aspects of conflict resolution.

Topics will include:

  • Theory of interest-based negotiation
  • Interest-based negotiation practice skills
  • Mediation training
  • Extensive negotiation and mediation simulations
  • Mediation ethics
  • Environmental conflict management
  • Gender aspects of conflict resolution
  • Civil society's role in mitigating and resolving conflict
  • South Africa and various case studies

Course Schedule

The training program will begin at 9am Monday, January 7, 2008, and end at 4pm Friday, January 11. The first day, which ends at 5pm, may be taken at a reduced rate for eight hours of MCLE credit.

There will be ample opportunities for participants to explore the Monterey Bay area and enjoy its amazing offerings. Breakfast and lunch will be provided from January 7 through January 11. Transportation, accommodations, and evening meals are the responsibility of the participant.

PRogram Faculty

William Monning, J.D., Director of the Mandell-Gisnet Center for Conflict Management at the Monterey College of Law, professor of international negotiation and conflict resolution at the Monterey Institute of International Studies, and co-founder and President of Global Majority, is the academic coordinator of the program and will conduct the core training. Skilled trainers from Global Majority will assist speakers and instructors throughout the program.
