Whether you are a student looking to build your resume and gain course credit, or a professional intent on acquiring new knowledge and expanding your network, "Promoting Peace through Dialogue, Latin America Session" presents a golden opportunity for those interested in environmental conflict resolution. This training seminar includes a two-week residential program conducted by expert trainers from around the world. Participants will receive extensive training in conflict resolution techniques and gain an in-depth understanding of several of the world's major conflicts, including the factors which continue to fuel them. Participants will also have the opportunity to increase their knowledge of other cultures through interaction with and exposure to an array of cultural views and backgrounds. A day-long excursion to the Arenal volcano and hot springs is included in the program cost.

Who can Enroll?

This program is open to final-year undergraduate students, graduate students, and professionals. Applicants from a variety of backgrounds are encouraged to apply. No more than 45 total participants will be accepted for this program.

Seminar Topics

This course is designed to maximize exposure of 45 select participants to the skills and techniques necessary to effectively negotiate and mediate conflict situations, particularly in an environmental context. The seminar will be conducted in English. Participants are encouraged to view this course as a career advancement opportunity. To that end, this course provides ample opportunities to meet recognized professionals. An exciting aspect of this course is the opportunity to meet and interact with others who are dedicated to the field of environmental conflict resolution and will become international leaders. The topics offered provide an in-depth understanding of multiple aspects of conflict resolution.

Topics will include:

  • Theory of interest-based negotiation
  • Interest-based negotiation practice skills
  • Mediation training
  • Extensive negotiation and mediation simulations
  • Environmental peacemaking
  • Environmental conflict management
  • Transboundary water conflicts
  • Environmental cooperation and conservation strategies
  • Background to various conflicts in Latin America
  • Cultural aspects of conflict resolution
  • Gender aspects of conflict resolution
  • Civil society's role in resolving conflict

Course Schedule

The training program will begin on Monday morning, May 26, 2008, and will end Friday evening, June 6.

There will be ample opportunities for participants to explore the city of Ciudad Colon and enjoy its cultural offerings. Accommodations are provided from the evening of May 25 through the morning of June 7.

Included in the price of the seminar is a day-long excursion to the Arenal volcano and hot springs on Saturday, May 31.
